: After a couple of years of use I am now finding that the foam that I

: getting rougher, but I need to upholster it.

A couple of thoughts, Dave. If the abrasion is caused by a general breakdown in the surface of the material --- or maybe from exposed bands of contact cement, if the underdeck structure is built up from foam pieces --- I'd sand it well first using Dragon Skin if it's really rough and then sheetrock/plaster sanding screen. Then I'd either cover it with a thin neoprene or spray it with a rubber covering.

I've had very good luck with two or three mil single sided neoprene, nylon out for durability and rubber in for adhesion to the foam, contact cemented on (ten years on my back support in the Pintail on which I slide in and out, and it's still functional --- although starting to look a little ratty at the edges). And I'm experimenting with "Plasti Dip" rubber spray on material --- basic stuff in Lowes and Home Depot in my area. (Same stuff sold for dipping tool handles, but in an aerosol form, so thinner in effect.) Not very expensive, doesn't add any dimension to the pads so the fit stays right, and it seems to last. That last bit is the open issue 'cause I haven't been using it that long. If really helps to have a very smooth surface before you spray because the build-up of material sprayed on is minimal, even after three or four light coats; and those screen sanding sheets sure work well as a prep.

Good luck.
