: Over the weekend I built a sliding rack for my two kayaks. I used the track
: hardware from a pole-barn door. I built two "T's" from treated
: lumber and hung them upside down from the track slide hardware. Between
: the two upside down "T's" I attatched 8' 2x2's that are 12"
: on center. The two kayak's sit on the 2x2's. The entire track assembly is
: attatched to the joists under a screen porch. When I slide the kayaks
: under the porch they stay dry and are out of the way. Two questions: 1. I
: thought about padding the 2x2's. My fear is if I put the Coho away wet, I
: will have a problem with moisture in the padding and stains on the boat. I
: am currently leaning towards varnishing the 2x2's so the boat slides in
: easier.
Very nice idea. I do not believe padding like carpet would retain moisture for long, also the surface of the boat is impervious to H2O.
Padding aside, I suggest evaluating how dry the underporch environment is, up in NH, things are pretty moist year round, and the boat would like a lot of ventilation.
: 2. Is sitting on 2x2's OK for the entire winter? The Coho does not have a lot
: of rocker so its seems to get pretty good support. My other boat is a
: plastic Old Town (I am builing a Spring Return this winter). Will a platic
: boat sitting on 2x2's all winter be a problem?
Sounds like the 2x2s are lenghtwise not cross beams, should not deform the wood boat. Plastic boats always seem to scrunch down and settle onto roofracks, so maybe that would happen over months here, but if you are not strapping it down the effect would be slight.
I am picturing a further evolution, where you add to the 2by to create a more developed receptacle.
: I appreciate your help
