HELP Spidey!!!!

Hi Spidey,

Well I tried putting a complete coat of varnish on the hull of the flame boat last night with a rag and was not happy with the results. I started out with a T shirt. The rag was not completely soaked through. When I applied it, it left a bunch of places that appeared rather dry and the sanding still showed through. I used a lot more varnish than I normally use with a brush as well. I finally gave up and went back to a brush and was much happier with the final outcome. Tonight I would like to re-varnish the deck on my 18 to get rid of a run I got last spring. I was hoping to use a rag to avoid runs but am now unsure I want to use one. Should I use some other type of rag? or do I need to completely soak the rag? I need some help before I resort to the brush.
