Hi Spidey

: Hi Ian;

: How does a mil gauge work? Is it destructive to the finish where you measure?
: It sounds like a great idea, I could have used one on several occasions.

: Thanks in advance, Spidey

A mil guage is simply a thin piece of plastic or metal with graduate steps cut into it. When you apply your finish you just set it down on the surface and whichever step the finish material reaches tells you how thick your coating is. If you did this on the hull of you kayak it would leave a small mark but another way is to use your technique on a piece of scrap and use the mil guage check it there, modify your technique until you get the results you want and then use this new , improved technique on the boat. If you stick with the technique you can be sure you are getting the right thickness.

The mark on the hull would disappear if you went over it again, so you could check your boat just to be sure.
