Bill, Pull the straps off and use bungee to hold down the hatch. Put the bungee into the 2 outside holes on each side and tie a knot in each end to form a loop. Install a single hole SS hook( J shaped hook I got at a marine store) in center hole. Pull each loop accross the hatch and onto the hook on opposite side. I have been using this method for three years with no leaks or other problems. I did not use the little blocks of wood that you use with the straps.

You wont have to drill new holes or do anything special to try this hold down method. If you dont like it, go back to the straps.
