: Anyone have any experience with alternatives to S&G and Strip Building?
: One method I know of is strip planking a mold with foam strip and glassing
: inside and out. Much of the process would be similar to wood stripping ala
: Nick Schade but with foam. Toothpicks pushed through the foam edgewise
: holds the foam in place until glassed. The possible advantage is lighter
: weight if a light enough foam is used and maybe a quicker building time.
: I have one 3mm Okoume (sp?) ply kayak and it weighs 27 lbs. I REALLY like
: that. But the shape is weird and it is the shape alone that makes it rigid
: enough. I'd like the flexibilty to build most any shape I want with
: adequate rigidity and toughness along with a sub 30 lb. weight. Looks like
: strippers are running in the upper 30's, low 40s.
: Any one have any thoughts?
Someone actually in the aeronautical industry did try to build one with foam but came out heavier than wood. Advantage: - faster stripping (but that is all you get) Disadvantage: - heavy (probably foam absorps more epoxy)
- need to paint the boat (not as pretty a product)
- need twice as many forms because the foam is softer, so it sag between forms. Your choice.
