I built a cold molded 31' racing trimaran in the early 80's. It was a WONDERFUL material. Rigid, resilient, durable. As an experiment, I left some of the exterior surfaces unglassed, just epoxy coated (3-4 coats). These unglassed areas did not hold up as well as the glassed surfaces. I got occassional cracks at the veneer joints. With glass, I doubt there would be much weight savings for equal scantling vs. strip.
