Hi Tom

This "White Wood", is it a hard wood, or soft? We out here in Calif. use what is called Alder as a substitute for Birch in cabinet work. It's very light colored and has similar characteristics to birch, except the grain isn't quite as bold and it's easier to work with cutting tools. That's what I'll be using for my Walrus, with the exception of the Keelson, which I'm going to make with Oak. I can only get 8' and 10' in the Alder, and I want a solid onepiece keelson. I believe the Alder is a bit heavier than Pine, but, lighter than many of the hardwoods. Other than that I would have no idea what they might be using. Hope that helps!
