: I'd like to build a kayak or two- we have two little kids (4 & 7), so a
: relatively small double might be best, for one parent and one kid. I plan
: to build a frame as for skin-on-frame, but cover it with lauan, and glass
: it. Where is a good source for the design and layout of the forms? I built
: a S&G, and love it, but I think I can do the frame type a lot faster. I
: have a great old book, 'Canoes and Canoeing', by Percy W. Blandford, that
: has some nice designs, ('canoe' in BritSpeak = 'kayak' in USASpeak) and
: inspired the heck out of me many years ago, but I'm thinking there must be
: some newer designs that will probably handle better. Any thoughts? Thanks
: for a great forum! Anyone interested in one more custom seat building
: technique? Steve

Hi Steve

There are several of us on the BB that are now in the process of building The Walrus as taken from the book " Wood and Canvas Kayak Building " by George Putz. It is a great looking design, and can be adapted to several sizes and so forth. His book is very good at explaining the construction, and since his forms are so big and cumbersome, there are a few of us who have shortened his forms and have Benchtop forms now. You can get his book from Amazon or probably any of the other major book suppliers, or check the local library. If you read it and would like to do the shortened forms, here is an earlier thread that was posted by Paul Jacobsen some time ago that has the numbers for them. Hope I get this right, but, if not, then you can contact Mike Hanks on this BB and he has built it before and has the info you would like. He also did one in plywood on frame as you are thinking.

If that doesn't work you can look it up in the archives. Sure took a lot of time out of my drawing up and eventual cutting out. THANKS PAUL ;) Check it out Steve and see if it isn't what you are looking for, then join several of us in building the Walrus and there will always be answers to any questions right here when and if you need them. Good luck in you search and building.
