Hi Rick,
Go out and look at a 5 year old car in your area. A car spends all of its time outside in the sun and is driven down the road at 70mph in the rain and snow (you know, that white stuff that falls from the sky in northern climates!).
It has far better UV protection that varnish and it will stand up to chemical spills such as gasoline, campstove fuel, etc.
The problems are that it must be sprayed, it is very toxic and it is expensive.
