: I was down at the local Radio Shack yesterday looking for the bits and pieces
: needed to hook up an electric pump in my kayak.
: While there, I found a rubber cap that goes over the top of a toggle switch
: and makes it WATERPROOF.
I've used similar devices on prototypes of emergency buoys at sea, and have had mixed results. And, to me, an electric pump should not have a potential failure mode built in. But that's me.
As an option, check out the (expensive) options for "submersible switches" at Control Products, Inc. in East Hanover, New Jersey. The toggle runs over a cam which activates the contacts inside a small, rubber-encased box. Pretty simple, and pretty reliable so far in tests. The installation may be migrating to a winter project.
