: Oh Boy!! That is a loaded question!

: $200.00 is not a bad price with materials and time taken into account. The
: fact that you are very happy with the job means you definitely got good
: value. If you do another one go back to this same guy because he will have
: the experience and know what to expect. Usually, the first time anyone
: does something they are nervous and the price may go up accordingly. You
: may get an even better deal now that he knows it is far easier than
: spraying a car.

: I just did a friends boat, It took 1/2 gallon of clear, 1 quart of hardener
: and 1 quart of reducer.

:Hey Ian ,

That sounds like a lot of coats considering that it has such impressive UV properties. It only takes a quart of z-spar to do 4 coats on a kayak and it has lots of voc's. I was under the impression that the 2 part urethanes were more solids than varnish. A buddy of mine runs a body shop at a large GM dealership and told me that at the factory they are only putting on 1 or 2 coats of the clearcoat and that on custom paint jobs they might use 3 or 4 coats with lots of buffing. Would a quart of clearcoat do more than 1 coat on a 17 ft kayak exterior?

I am beginning to think clearcoat is probably the ideal finishing material with the exception of the toxic element which can be dealt with especially if you hire someone with a fresh air mask .
