Once you have a pit, it is likely to telegraph through to subsequent layers. You need to sand down until there is no pit. If the pit is originally caused by some contaminant, you will want to clean off the contaminants. I have had good success with "Simple Green" sprayed on full strength. I then scrubbed with a scotch-bright and then rinsed thoroughly with water.
: OK - after the first and second coat of varnish I was chalking it up
: substrate imperfections, but I continue to get a pitting in my 3rd coat of
: varnish. These are small and frequent pin size depressions in the varnish
: on one part of my after deck. I thought that after 3 coats sanded between
: each that they would go away. Do I have a contamination problem? If so why
: would they stay in the same spot?
: I am still searching the archives for an answer, but anything y'all can tell
: me would be appreciated. I am planning to put one more varnish coat on the
: hull and two more on the deck.
: Thanks
