Really, it's worth the money to get the design you will be happy with. If the budget is that tight, look into RAKA glass and epoxy, it's quality stuff and will easily save you more than the plans price. Also, I've done a lot with old wood instead of buying it. A little creative resawing is worth the effort. I'm not sure what I've got into the Spring Run, but I'd guess it's less than $400, including the plans. Or, as suggested, you can risk narrowing up the double in the book, or modifying the single.
