I tried that technique and failed pretty miserably. I think the problem is I wasn't getting enough steam through the piece, only into the one side contacting the iron. I rigged up a really simple steamer which worked great. The picture is pretty self-explanatory, I also wrapped a wet rag around the spout of the tea kettle to help contain the steam. Obviously you don't want to be holding the pvc pipe while it heats up. Rather I just dropped a roll of duct tape onto it and put the duct tape on the edge of a table to support it and keep it from rolling. 15 minutes of steam and it made fast work of the strips.
