I finally got my Guillemot in the water today. Got my first ding out of the way. (A six inch scratch down to the glass on the hull) One point on one rock and fate.
I was more than pleased with the kayak. I felt comfortable almost from the start. The only other sea kayak I have been was a rotomolded one by Preception and I didn't feel as comfortable after three hours of paddling. I have done a lot of whitewater kayaking and the Guillemot reminds me of the quick response of the whitewater yaks. In other words, it is like a whitewater boat that wants to go straight!
I want to thank Nick Schade for his book. By far the best do-it-yourself book that I have ever seen. I also want to thank him for the great Kayak Building Bulletin Board. Also, I want to thank the many people on the board for their help and encouragement. Guys, you got me over some rough spots.
This winter, I am going to build a Great Auk for longer camping trips. Kinda plan on a trip around Lake Thrumond in SC and GA. Gotta do something to stay young.
