several lessons I have learned in building kayaks for kids 1)durability..younger paddlers have more fun in a boat they can bang around and drag up on the beach 2)making a short version of a stripper design can really change the tracking ability. consider the CLC Chesapeake 14 design. It is a hard chine design which should track well and you probably won't need a skeg or rudder and because it is plywood it will be durable. the CLC 14 will be 2 feet longer than a Umiak but 100 times better looking. addison
