Don't know about the eastern red cedar, but I can tell you what it is like trying to plane some pine and spuce with small knots, ughhh. I will have to sand it down to match the surrounding areas, but they will look good, just more work. Also if you watch your pieces of cedar for abrupt changes in grain structure you can leave those out if you have extra, they tear out chunks when you plane.
