: Hi, I'm new here, and also new to boat building. A friend and I just built
: our second Cape Charles 15.6. His was first, mine second. I bought some
: less than beautiful Okoume plywood, so I decided to stain the whole thing
: first. (golden oak) It really looks beautiful and I love it so much. I'm
: going to build a Chesapeake 17, next. I keep hearing tidbits here and
: there about whether or not expoxy will bond with the wood if it's been
: stained first.
: My experience has been very positive, and I've had absolutely no problems
: whatsoever. The boat looks great and it's been done for a few weeks now
: and I'm not seeing any problems at all. My question is this...has anyone
: experienced problems with stained wood under epoxy? Is this something I
: shouldn't do?
: It seems to be just fine, but I'd like some input before starting my next
: boat.
: Got the plywood today, I'm just waiting for the plans to arrive.
: Thanks!
: Mary Martha
: PS: I've found this forum to be VERY VERY helpful!!! Maybe someday, I'll gain
: enough experience to share some of my and my friends ingenuity. I love how
: everyone uses their creativity and minds to find better ways of doing
: things...building kayaks is really a great way to exersize the brain, too.
: I'm enjoying reading all of the interesting ideas!

Someday is Today Mary Martha. Was your stain waterbased or oil? If oil based, how long did you allow the stain to sit before you applied the epoxy? It is the general consenses here that you can't get epoxy to adhere to an oil based stain, and I would like to hear future comments as to how it is holding up. I have always been curious as to why laquer and polyurethane would stick to it so well, and epoxy wouldn't. ??? I would love to do an oak or ash boat, with the Golden Oak stain as that is a really nice color. also, some of the antique whites they use on cabinet work would be a nice touch.

Sounds like you answered your own question as to whether it is O.K. to do, but, I'd wait and give it some time and see just how it holds up. Did you do any test panels and try to pull the glass off after they cured? Might be a good test to try, on you present combination, and on whatever you plan to do next time. Whatever the results, post them here and you may get a following, or may be a warning to others what not to do. ??? Sounds good so far.
