Like a plane, it helps to hold the tool at an angle to the direction of motion. this gives it more of a slicing action and will help reduce chatter. Also make sure your blade is sharp, sharp - sharp.

: spokeshave at an angle to the direction of pull (or push) along the wood,
: or do you actually set the blade at an angle (which is easy to do since
