Hi Ben,
I think the way Nick describes it is about as close as anybody could get. From what I can see it looks like it's all going fine. It took me a while to get the hang of it as well. But like Shawn says the outside stem piece covers it all up. After you plane it down and add the strip, just do any filling with little strips of wood. Trust me it will look great!
