I have built three boats from plans, am working on a fourth. I believe that the cost of materials is almost a wash. The advantage to a kit is that you do not have to build the kit parts, it saves time. The advantage to plans is that you get a choice of different materials, and the expense is spread out a little more. I also think that success is more a matter of patience and care than skill. You should be fine with kit or plans. Have fun!!
