I built the Ches. 17 last year and if I were to build another one I would build the 17LT. It is less bulky and seems more enjoyable to paddle. The only reason to build a 17 is if he needs to carry lots of gear.

On a side note, I paddles my Ches 17 this weekend after paddling my Outer Island for a month and a half exclusively.
While in the Chesepeake, I kept turning around to see if I was dragging something. What a difference in paddling effeciency.
