Well go to Shaw Lumber (217 Como Ave 651 488 2525) in St. Paul, its near the Capital (Pennsylvania and Como). That is were I buy my boat building lumber, I was just their today and got grade “D” cedar which is virtually knot free. Tell them what you’re using it for. They sell it by the linear foot, so a 20 foot long board cost the same per foot as an 8 foot board. I think they quoted me $23 for a 1”x 8” x 8’ I don’t know if this is expensive or not but it is beautiful stuff.
This is a commercial Lumber company but they will sell to the general public. They are only open Monday through Friday, I think 8 – 5.
If you talk to Andrew (my Brother) at the city desk he should be able to help you.
You’re right about HD all I ever see is very knotty stuff.

: I live in the Minneapolis area. The Home Depot personnel told me that this
: was western red cedar, but you know how that goes. Actually, the boards I
: was looking at were not the decking/fencing. They were 1" boards that
: were next to the clear pine, oak, and aspen boards. This wood is supposed
: to be the better quality lumber that is all surfaced and everything. If
: anyone knows a better place to look I would appreciate any suggestions.
: I have seen that precut strips can be ordered but as with most prepared stuff
: this comes at a premium so I would prefer not to go this route.
