: Anyone here have and experiences with glass boats being holed? How about S&G
: or strippers? I did an expedition layup (two layers on the bottom outside
: and one layer on the inside) on the hull and KNOW it can take some
: pounding on rocks. To me, I would rather have a boat that handled superbly
: so I could AVOID the nasty rock dumpings than have a boat I couldn't count
: on but might survive a sharp rock.
This past summer I helped a paddling friend repair a four inch hole in the front of his Dagger Kevlar kayak. He whacked into small floating ice chunks too vigorously while exploring some of our tide water glacier fjords. A tuna fish can and duct tape to keep water out got him 70 miles back to the put in.
Fiberglass and Kevlar break too. This incident had us testing several kayaks with front, back or both compartments flooded, with and without gear or displacemant bags, to see how the kayaks handled and what freeboard they had in emergency situations. 70 wilderness miles away in 34 degree glacier water is not where you want to find these things out.
Good paddling. Randy
