On my skin kayak, the skin is adheared to gunnels etc. to a small amount. I know this because I'm lowereg my cockpit coaming and haave to peel back the polyester where it is lightly epoxied to the wood. You can pull it away with a pliers - it's not bonded like fiberglass cloth would be. The polyester does soak through but nowhere to the extent of fiberglass cloth. In most areas it didn't soak through at all.

One of the beauties of my skin boat is the wobbly, ugly sewing spine that runs down the center of the decks. It makes it all official and anybody who sees it, can't resist touching it.
