Edgar,
I can't recall any details off the top of my head - but I remember reading - maybe in Qajaq by David Zimmerly about an Arctic region (Labrador rings a bell) where they built REALLY big heavy kayaks and paddled them with REALLY big heavy paddles. I don't remember any details. If I come back across it I'll post more.
