Here in Ohio, it's also difficult to find anything clear except for redwood. I made most of this Guillemot from redwood, with some cedar and pine on the deck. The redwood may not bend as easily as cedar, but it bends enough. It's weight is close to cedar - maybe a tad heavier. My Guillemot weighs in at 44lbs. I used redwood entirely for the hull of my WLII, and it turned out fine too. So, I'd say go for it!
