Hey John

Instead of resin filler, or staining the whole boat, why don't you try piecing in splinters of wood of the same color and keep the color you wanted in the first place. It's been done before and I think you will be much happier that way. After staining a dark color, you will lose much of your color and grain pattern. Give it a try!!
