If you do decide to use the splinter method, don't flood the joint with glue, as it is not neccessary. Just put a very light coat, or a few dots, very small, and tape it down with masking tape. You only need enough glue to hold it in place until you apply the glass. There is no strength required, as it is just a filler. When you get it sanded, and then apply the glass it will be hardly noticable.
