On the contrary, the long paddles of the Eastern Canadian kayaks, as I assume this example to be, were adapted to handle the demands of the long and heavy kayaks of the region (some over 24 feet long by 25" wide) that in turn were adapted to the local hunting methods and sea conditions. These kayaks had a high foredeck and the paddles were often held in contact with a wear strip on the foredeck that supported their weight in use.
