My rack is not attached to factory slots, as my car does not have a factory rack. It's attached with steel clips to the molding chanels on the doors and rear windows. It's a steel to steel connection, with only a little paint and vinyl in between, and it's extremely strong. I was driving this weekend at 70 mph with crosswinds gusting to 40+ mph. The car was frequently blown sideways (kayaks make good sails), but the boat did not move in the cradles at all.
: Always use bow/stern ropes on these types of racks.
If they're attached to plastic factory grooves, I agree. In my case, they're not necessary. That's what I meant about evaluating each rack installation before deciding what straps to use, or not use.
