If you want to save money look at rough cut lumber it is usually cheaper. It will take more effort to finish all four sides of your strips but if you are doing it as a hobby its all part of the game. If you start with one piece of large dimensioned rough cut lumber then rip it every which way to get down to 1/4 inch strips all of the pieces will color match and you can control the final orientation of the grain.
