Jon,
If you press the wires down tight to the wood on the inside, they don't hold the tape up enough to notice. I usually tape right over everything and pull the wires after the epoxy has set up but is still a bit green. If they are too hard to get out, I heat one end with a small woodburning pen and they slide right out.
