It seemed like it was translucent all of the time, but it was out on Lake Washington on a sunny day. The dacron is pretty thin, but beefing it up with fiberglass would give it a lot more strength and durability.

I don't know about other heat shrink materials, might want to ask on the Baidarka Mailing List.
