: I'm a bit surprised that you found redwood decking. Mostly I see cedar or
: pressure treated SPF (that is a generic term for a white wood which may be
: Spruce, Pine or Fir) for decks. But, I guess you got lucky.
: Teh 5/4 lumber is closer to an inch in thickness. You can use in just as wel
: for strips, unless they have to bend a lot. In areas of great bending you
: will probably want to rip these narrower so they will be more flexible.
: ting them in half you would get strips that are a bit under 1/2 inch wide,
: and limber enough for most purposes.
: PGJ
Which way is the grain running? If the grain is flat ( wavy ) then you want to cut as Paul said. If the Grain is verticle, you would want to rip 3/4" pieces and then turn them sideways and rip your 14" thickness. The flat grain is prettier, of you are looking for pattern, but, is more difficult to fair out. The verticle grain is More plain in figure, but, easiet to work and keep fair.
I haven't seen that 5/4" stuff around here in years. I used to use it for furniture ( patio ). Is it pretty much clear? Few or no knots. If so, it ought to be great for your boat. Good luck and have fun.
