Hi Shawn, the canoe that I'm in the process of restoring was a canvass covered cedar strip, prospector. About 20 years or so ago the canvass was replaced with fibre glass, I guess it was cheaper at the time. The fibre glass is in alright shape, the gunnels are toast and have to be replaced. Many of the ribs have rotted where they meet the gunnels and then down a few inches below the gunnels. I suspect this has been the result of the canoe being left on the ground for extended periods, with moisture from the ground causing the damage to the wood. Anyway I have to come up with a way to either remove the ribs and replace each one, while at the same time figuring a way to adhere the ribs to the cedar strips, that are weathered with age to say the least. I thought about milling some cedar and and trying to attatch pieces somehow to the existing ribs, after cutting away the rotted material but I don't think this would give the necessary strength once the gunnels are secured. I hope this isn't too confusing. In any case, have any suggestions?
