: I am a high school technology teacher with students building a small car.

Yes I think so :-)
If the car doesn't look like a canoe of course
otherwise hard expensive plastic boards 50mm-100mm thath you glue together and than shape to the desired shape is the trad. way of making a plug. If you have a cad solid modell you can slice the modell and print, and glue them to the plastic boards
Anyhow it is a lot of work to make a plug
