I would sand out a dish shape area well around the crack just down to the wood. Also sand the varnish away good way around it so you will not be putting epoxy over any varnish areas. Build up glass layers to the dish area to make it level and epoxy all at once. Use large pieces of glass first then smaller pieces to finish to top until level. Cure and feather sand in and then revarnish area.
