: I would sand out a dish shape area well around the crack just down to the
: wood. Also sand the varnish away good way around it so you will not be
: putting epoxy over any varnish areas. Build up glass layers to the dish
: area to make it level and epoxy all at once. Use large pieces of glass
: first then smaller pieces to finish to top until level. Cure and feather
: sand in and then revarnish area.
I agree. Sand down to the wood if the glass has seperated from the wood. I learned the hard way doing a bandaid patch on the nose of my first boat. I hit the nose and seperated the glass from the wood. I figured that I could just glue it back down with epoxy. Aaannnhhhh, wrong answer. Two weeks later I hit the same spot and tore off a large chuck of glass, epoxy, and wood The end pore saved me. I'm sure that I would not have lost any boat if I had done the patch right in the first place.
If the crack has not seperated the glass from the wood you can probably work some epxoy into the crack and glass over it. Be sure to sand down to the glass fibers to get a good bond with the patch. If you have white around the crack you seperated the glass from the wood, and you'll want to sand down to the wood to make a good bond.
