Well, I launched the new modified Walrus today as planned. I noticed right away that is was very tippy getting in and the smaller cockpit also make entry more difficult. When I left the dock, It immediately became clear that at least one of the objectives was accomplished. It was VERY quick. It accelerated easily to a very fast pace. With my 3.25” wide Aluet paddle it was effortless to propel it. I think it turns about the same as my Arctic Tern when up on edge, but tracks stronger than the Tern when it is level in the water. Primary stability is light compared to my other kayaks, but I felt very comfortable with it after I got in. Secondary felt okay, but it didn’t have the rock solid edge of wider kayaks. There was only a slight breeze, and I felt no weathercocking. It felt quite lively in boat wakes. I like this new kayak quite a bit.

I’ll write up a trip report soon, with more details and post it on the trips BBS.
