In Response To: Plywood in the future for 4th walrus? (Paul G. Jacobson)

Paul,

I've been debating a plywood version, but this one is so light, I don't know whether I would use a plywood one. It is tempting though. I may do a strip version, that might be interesting. I'd probably use 1-1/2" x 3/16" b&c strips.

The cost on this one was under $120. Polyester is cheaper than Canvas. I didn't have to build the strongback for this one, and I found a good deal on the cedar for the fram and the OSB for the forms. I also found the brass screws at Tacoma Screw cost 10% of what they cost at Lowes Hardware or Boater's World.

Here is the basic materials list for this kayak. I think I rounded up on the costs.
$40 Polyester
$30 Wood (cedar fence boards, OSB, l/4 sheet leftover luan)
$10 Monel staples (leftover 1/2 package)
$5 Brass Screws (#4 1/2" & #4 3/4")
$30 Varathane (3 quarts)
$2 Polyurethane Glue (1/4 bottle)
?? A few ounces of epoxy

I'm not sure about the time involved. I had to figure out how to do the lowered floor. I had to redo some polyurethane glue joints, on the lowered floor, with epoxy. In order to do that I had to loosen the skin on the hull then tighten and re-attach it after the epoxy cured. The Varathane also took more time than the Snow Roof, but not much. This one probably took less time, but I keep trying new things and it slows me down. If I do another it will go faster, because I have the new forms.

Mike
: the boat looks good, and I have questions

: Are you planning to try a version of this design skinned in plywood?

: Your first two walruses cost under $250, as I recall. Any guess on the cost
: of developing this one? i assume this one went faster than the first and
: second. About how long of a building time?
