I have a small heat sealing machine and I tried it after I read your post - Mine's not up to the task! I could only smooth the sides of the tape that came in contact with the teflon covered heated strips, but no fusing where it needed it. Thanks for the info anyway.

The slots are easy to cut with a drill, but the other way sounds more elegant. My "secret" is to centerpunch the holes before I drill them . . . Also, I'd recommend starting with as small a drill bit as possible, like 1/16" - The reason is you're bound to go a little above and/or below the line, and you need the extra trim room to get clean slots. I was able to clean off every trace of drill marks while keeping the fit very snug. For a single layer like the webbing over the hatches, 1/16" was even a hint too loose.
