Merganser or Northbay

I've come down to Shearwater Merganser or CLC Northbay XL as likely candidates for my winter project. Has anyone paddled both? Strong opinions either way for firsttime builder? I know the answer might be both, but I need to start with one. 160#,5'10" athletic, but less than perfect roll.
