: Hello--

: I got to the shop yesterday and checked out the boat in detail. see the
: photo.

: It seems pretty sound with afew rough patchs...gouges, some rot and gaping
: seams.

: It had some spots filled with bondo and some with sawdust filled glue
: (resorcinol I think)

: From the advice of most of those who responded including at wooden boat's
: forum, i will reccomend to the customer to re-canvas it, it seems it was
: once canvased, judging by a row of small nail holes along the shearline nd
: a bit of canvas trapped by the big eye bolt in the bow.

: I took measurements of the boat and should be able to produce fairly a good
: lines drawing of it if you are interested.

I would guess that the characteristics of the sealant/paint used would be more important than the fabric. Barring expense, would not a satin weave of kevlar make an ok approach. Especially for dire circumstances. Like in the following.

There's a rural legend up here about couple of hunting dudes canoing across a lake to get to some good elk hunting on the other side and they come across a dream trophy elk swimming across in the same direction. It's really swimming fast and the guys are tiring fast especially inthe elbows, but it's against the rules to shoot it in the water and also hard to pull to shore. And at this rate they're going to lose it

So the brilliant notion comes to tie a loop in the canoe painter and try to hook it over one of the horns. They're successful and the living is easy. They just set back and figure to nail the critter when they reach shore. But as they get close. . . BANG!! they hit a rock and both lose their balance, the canoe over turns, the elk goes crazy and take off thru the trees with the canoe smashing to bits the more it bounces off all the trees.

So at least if you use kevlar, it may hang together for a little longer!!
