Together with my son (now 13) and Daughter (now 9) We have managed to build 4 kayaks. One for each family member. Nate has become a stong paddler while Biz is still learning. Each of the four boats is different, each allows the paddler a sense of independence. When Biz gets tired, we tie her boat to the back of any of the other three. This way she can go along for a ride and still feel a sense of independence. The boats we built include a Chesapeake 16' and 17', a Patuxent 17.5' and a Cape Charlie 14'. We add weight into the hold of Biz'z boat as she is still to light to hold the boat down. Biz has a huge sense of pride in having her own kayak!

We have enjoyed both the building and the paddling of these boats. It is pretty neat to all be on the water exploring different areas of the lakes and rivers in our area.

Based on my experience, I would build a boat for each person! There are many tremendous models out there. Build boats that fit (obviously the girls will have to grow into the boats just keep a sense of proportion), get light weight paddles with good drip rings, get your PFD's, then on the nicest day possible go a family to some calm flat water, spend time exploring and time pulling the girls along in their own boats!

Best regards,

Steve
