Late breaking news --
I took one of those 20 cent plastic webbing locks (the plastic piece with 2 slots) and sat down with a piece of webbing, and found it can be used to produce a non-slip loop, or a single ended stop for hatch purposes. No epoxy, no other fasteners, and infinitely adjustable. Plus, it has a concave face on one side that can straddle the slot and provide a bit of stress spreading.
I'm off to buy a bag of those, I'll try to add a pic later.
