I am a newbie builder as well. You have found a wonderful website to derive some support and direction. First...please understand that the prior posting by George is the opposite of what you can expect from this crowd. If you have a charge of helping a student, and you in this case are a student as well...you have come to the right place.

There a many others who will post suggestions..whom are 'lightyears' more experienced than I am in terms of offering advice about kayak building. It has been extremely helpful for me to read this listserve daily, and to delve into the archives to look up already posted topics.

In fact, not long ago a high school student received incredible support and advice after writing to this listserve. I have found Nick Schade's book on kayak building to be incredibly informative and easy to understand(can be found on this website or Amazon.com). Others will suggest additional books and websites I am sure.

Please continue to consult with this listserve...and encourage your student to jump in as well. In a 'sense', George has a point...it is your student's project. However, it is your responsibility to mentor him. Who knows...you might just get addicted to the world of kayak building/paddling like many of us here.

As for George....we can continue to rant at him...or just offer to those who also seek what we do...the good that is here....that is enough for now....
