: I just finished two days with the spokeshave and foam sanding block. After I
: stuff myself Thursday I get Friday off and plan to glass the inside of my
: Great Auk. I will give the cloth some time to lay in place, but I have
: questions about the ends. Will I have to cut the cloth, overlap the ends
: and tuck them into the corner? I plan to do an end pour later; do I even
: have to glass right into the ends? Will my plastic squeege work?
I lay the cloth out and let it rest a bit before I glass the inside of the hull. I also pre cut the bow and stern to rough shape prior to starting to glass. A good way to let it rest and to cut it to shape is to flip the hull over, lay the glass out on the bottom of the hull and cut it to shape.
I have done the over lap and tuck and it has worked just fine (it is probably stronger) however it is messy and time consuming.
A friend of mine, he does not glass the last few inches of the bow or stern at all. He has never had a problem (4 coats of glass on the outside on the bow and stern thou).
On this boat I am going to try something a little different. I plan in using some 4 oz strips of cloth on the bow and stern on the inside. Then over lap the 4 oz glass with 6 oz glass within an inch or two of the bow and stern. I think this method may be neater and easier to work.
My opinion, I think the inside the hull at the bow and stern are the messiest part of glassing a boat and it is time consuming to get a neat job and you can not get a sander in there to clean it up either. I you find that you have messy parts and glass fibers sticking outwards don’t worry. The end pore with cover up some if not all of the imperfections. If you don’t think so in places while the epoxy is still green just trim the loose threads with a razor knife.
