Hmmm... I see. Easy to miss the obvious until you try something yourself. In any case, let me know what works via email or a new post - I was just ready to start with carving a minicel seat and now am not sure what I want to do.

One other possibility with my idea would be to carve and mount your seat with a little contact adhesive (as is). Then glass it while it is in the boat; you could overlap the first (or last) layer of cloth about 1" onto the inside of the hull to anchor the seat. If you ever needed to get it out, I don't think it would be that hard to detach and split in half to remove. The extra 1" edge could be sanded out fairly easily.

I've liked the idea of a custom fiberglass seat, but have been intimidated by the time to make a plaster cast, reverse mold, mold, etc... A covered carved minicel seat still seems like it may provide the best of both worlds. Or fail miserably (isn't this sort of thing fun to work through?).

: The biggest problem I can see is that it would be next to impossible to get
: the seat into the cockpit! I've been struggling with just my foam seat,
: and I don't know how it will be if I pre-attach the side hip supports. I'm
: pondering assembling the seat in the cockpit, because I'm not sure I could
: bend things enough to squeeze it in as a complete assembly.

: This is a bigger problem for me than some have, as my beam is 24" and
: the coaming width is about 17-1/2" . . . That's a lot of squeezing to
: get it in place! And if it were fiberglassed . . . :)
